Dental Erosion

Updated: Feb 18, 2021

Ever wonder how teeth erosion occurs?

First we need to find out what is tooth erosion. Tooth erosion is the irreversible loss of tooth tissue due to exposure to acid. There are 2 sources of exposure: intrinsic which occurs from within your body and extrinsic coming from outside your body.

Intrinsic acid exposure occurs when someone experiences gastric reflux or recurrent vomiting.

Extrinsic acid can be found in:

  1. Drinks such as fruit juice, carbonated drinks, sport drinks, wine

  2. Acidic foods such as citrus fruits

  3. Medications, such as Vitamin C or Aspirin

Brushing straight after a meal

Contrary to popular belief, brushing your teeth straight after a meal is not the best. It is recommended you avoid brushing for at least 30 minutes after eating or drinking acidic food or drinks. This will help control dental erosion.

How do you know if you are at risk?

There is an increased risk of dental erosion for people who:

  1. eat or drink lots of acidic foods or drinks

  2. suffer from a dry mouth or have a low salivary flow

  3. do not drink the recommended daily water intake (2 Litres)

  4. regularly drink caffeinated drinks

How to control dental erosion?

  1. Make sure to drink lots of water

  2. Drink non-acidic drinks in place of carbonated drinks, fruit drinks, cordials

  3. Minimise acidic foods and drinks to main meals

  4. Avoid brushing for at least 30 minutes after eating or drinking acidic foods or drinks

  5. Brush at least twice a day with a toothpaste containing fluoride

  6. Use a soft toothbrush

  7. Consult your dentist if you need additional fluoride treatment (e.g. Fluoride rinse)

  8. Regular dentist check ups to spot early signs of erosion
